Fall Storm Season in NWA: How to Handle Cracked and Broken Window Glass the Right Way

Fall Storm Season in NWA: How to Handle Cracked and Broken Window Glass the Right Way

Every October we watch the same weather pattern roll through Northwest Arkansas: a warm, humid afternoon, a fast-moving cold front, and then a round of wind and hail that leaves Bentonville, Rogers, and Springdale homeowners staring at a cracked pane. The good news is that a broken window almost never means a whole new window. In most cases, we replace only the glass, and your frame, trim, and siding never get touched.

First Steps After the Glass Breaks

Safety comes first. If the pane is shattered, keep kids and pets away and put on gloves before you pick up anything. Then stabilize the opening:

  • Tape a heavy plastic sheet or contractor bag over the opening on the interior side to keep rain and insects out.
  • Do not pull loose shards out of the glazing channel. Removing them can release more glass and it makes our measuring visit harder, not easier.
  • Photograph the damage right away. Most homeowner policies in Arkansas cover storm-related glass damage, and clear photos speed up the claim.

What Actually Gets Replaced

Most modern windows hold an IGU, an insulated glass unit made of two panes sealed around a spacer. When hail cracks the outer pane, the whole sealed unit gets swapped, because the airtight seal is what gives the window its insulating value. We measure the unit, order a replacement built to the same thickness and spacer width, and set it back into the frame with a proper wet seal so water stays out.

If your window is in a door, within 24 inches of a door, or close to the floor, building code treats it as a hazardous location. Replacement glass there must be safety glazing that meets CPSC 16 CFR 1201 or ANSI Z97.1, which in practice means tempered or laminated glass. A reputable glazier will bring this up without being asked. If a bid does not mention safety glazing for a door lite, ask why.

Tempered, Laminated, or Standard Annealed?

Standard annealed glass is fine for most upper-story windows. Tempered glass is roughly four times stronger and breaks into small, relatively harmless pieces, which is why code requires it near doors, tubs, and walking surfaces. Laminated glass sandwiches a plastic interlayer between two panes, so even when it cracks, it stays in the opening. For homes on exposed ridgelines in Bella Vista or open lots around Centerton where wind-driven debris is a repeat problem, laminated glass on the windward side is a worthwhile upgrade for not much more money.

Why Speed Matters in the Fall

A cracked IGU is not just cosmetic. Once the seal is compromised, humid Arkansas air migrates into the airspace, and by the time cold nights arrive in November you will see permanent fog between the panes. Replacing the unit while the crack is fresh costs the same as replacing it later, but you skip weeks of drafts, condensation, and higher heating bills.

If an October storm got one of your windows, request a free estimate or give our Bentonville shop a call. We measure, order, and install replacement glass across all of Northwest Arkansas, usually within a week of measuring.
